Description
保靖黄金茶 Baojing Huangjin Cha (or Gold Tea) is a type of green tea originating from Baojing County, located in the Xiangxi Tujia and Miao Autonomous Prefecture of Hunan province, China. It is often referred to as "Huangjin Tea," named after the local tea tree variety known as the "Huangjin" tree. This tea tree variety is primarily used to produce green tea. The oldest known Huangjin Tea tree is over 400 years old, standing at a height of 4.6 meters with a crown width of 5.5 meters. There’s a renowned legend of "one liang of gold for one liang of tea." In the year 1539 during the Ming dynasty, many officials who passed by Baojing County suffered from malaria, and a local Miao ethnic grandmother brewed tea from her own century-old tea tree leaves to treat them. The officials' recovery was swift, leading to the presentation of a piece of gold to the Miao grandmother, thus earning the village its name "Huangjin Village." Baojing County, where this tea is produced, is characterized by a favorable environment with year-round mist, abundant rainfall, a mild climate, fertile soil, and lush vegetation. These factors contribute to the ideal conditions for the cultivation of Baojing Huangjin Tea, making it one of the finest green teas in China. The appearance of Baojing Huangjin Tea features vibrant green tea leaves with distinct tender buds, curled leaves, and a bright, clear, light green liquor color. Because the tea leaves from this tree variety contain more amino acids than most other tea trees (usually double the amount, at around 7%), this tea tastes mellow and won’t turn astringent even after multiple infusions. This tea is harvested before the Qingming solar term using the one bud and one leaf picking standard.
