Yellow Tea

After our first yellow tea (黄茶, Huang Cha) sampler two years ago, we’re excited to bring it back—this time featuring three unique styles from Mt. Mengding, along with a returning favorite from Huoshan. Together, they offer a chance to explore the rarest of China’s six major tea types. What sets yellow tea apart is the unique “Men Huang” (闷黄, or “sealing yellow”) process, in which the leaves are gently smothered during slow oxidation. This encourages enzymatic reactions, softening the grassy sharpness of fresh tea leaves into a smoother, richer, and more mellow profile, with subtle notes of toastiness and sweetness. Oxidation level varies by region and picking standard; based on the latter, yellow teas are classified as Huang Ya (yellow bud tea), Huang Xiao Cha (yellow small tea), and Huang Da Cha (yellow big tea). We’ve selected three yellow teas from Mt. Mengding, each crafted by Master Lu Dan: a bud-only Meng Ding Huang Ya, a yellow small tea, and a yellow big tea. Meng Ding Huang Ya is one of China’s four most renowned yellow teas, grown on the misty, high-altitude slopes of Mt. Mengding. To offer a regional contrast, we’ve also included a big yellow tea from Huoshan, showcasing different processing techniques and flavors from another classic yellow tea origin.
