Wuliang Mountain Teas
This month we explore the diversity of Yunnan Nanjian County’s Wuliang Mountain, presented through four teas that highlight its high-elevation biodiversity and organic cultivation. Three selections come from Phoenix Mountain (Fenghuangshan), located along the northern boundary of Wuliang Mountain and crafted by Yunshui Guniang Phoenix Mountain Organic Tea Estate. Founded in 1955, the estate has grown into an eco-destination featuring certified organic gardens, wild old-tree forests, a boutique hotel, scenic hiking routes, and well-known bird-watching sites—an environment where tea, nature, and culture coexist. From this landscape, the Organic Black Tea expresses warm, honeyed aromatics shaped by gentle oxidation. The Organic Green Tea offers a bright, pan-fried interpretation of the same leaves, while the Organic Moonlight White Tea reveals a soft, slow-dried sweetness. Together, they provide a rare chance to compare three processing styles from a single terroir. Our final tea comes from Wuliangshan’s famous Cherry Blossom Valley: a 2025 Qingxin Oolong, grown at 1,800–2,500 meters and crafted in Taiwanese style. Its floral, high-mountain character invites comparison with Taiwanese oolongs, yet carries the distinctive clarity and coolness of Wuliangshan’s environment. Together, these four teas show how one mountain expresses itself across multiple traditions, each shaped by clean air, elevation, and organic farming.
